Rotterdam sees significant increase in use of solar power on port building roofs

The number of solar panels on the rooftops of large buildings in Rotterdam’s port is rapidly increasing. The solar park on Patrizia buildings along Witte Zeeweg 3-21 on the Maasvlakte was inaugurated on 6 July 2023.

Sunrock constructed the solar roof on Witte Zeeweg. The capacity of the 120,000 m² rooftop solar park is comparable to the average annual energy consumption of around 8,000 homes. Sunrock will provide the grid with the green power generated.

The addition of this 25 MWp park boosted the total installed solar capacity on the port building roofs to around 89 MWp.

The Port of Rotterdam Authority found that the overall solar potential on port building roofs is between 130 and 150 MWp, meaning that there is still room for increase.

The authority noted that an increasing number of port businesses are choosing to become green by putting solar panels on their rooftops.
