Saudi Global Ports (SGP) has received three Quay Cranes (QC) with automation capabilities and three Hybrid Automated Rubber Tyre Gantry Cranes (RTGs) at King Abdulaziz Port Dammam (KAPD).
This new equipment will increase SGP’s capacity from 2.5 million to 3.2 million TEUs, augmenting their current fleet of 15 QCs and 47 RTGs.
The new QCs feature a minimum outreach of 25 rows, with the potential for further extension, enabling SGP to efficiently handle larger next-generation 24,000 TEU vessels.
The QCs and RTGs will undergo approximately eight weeks of testing and commissioning before becoming operational in August 2024. Additionally, SGP has placed orders for 15 more hybrid RTGs, expected to arrive in July 2024.

The arrival of these QCs and RTGs will strengthen SGP’s handling capacity, allowing us to provide better service levels to our customers and keep trade flowing,” stated Edward Tah, CEO of SGP.
In 2020, SGP, with the support of its technical partner PSA International, committed to investing up to US$1.8 billion over its 30-year concession to operate and develop both container terminals at KAPD in four phases. The acquisition of this equipment is a key component of its Phase 1 expansion plans.
