Saudi ports increase box volumes in first month of 2023

The flow of containers in the ports operated by the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) increased by 24.05% in January, compared with the same month last year, totalling 694,803 TEUs.

Mawani’s report showed a 17.8% year-on-year increase in exported containers to 206,177 TEUs in the first month of 2023, while imported containers have also maintained an increasing trend, rising 26.08% to 220,119 TEUs.

Additionally, Saudi ports handled 268,507 TEUs in the transshipment sector, translating to a 27.57% growth over January 2022.

In the meantime, the consolidated cargo figures for January point to a 9.55% gain in volumes to reach 26,360,132 tons from the preceding year’s total of 24,061,871 tons.

As for dry bulk, freight climbed by 3.95% to 4,035,580 tons in January, while liquid bulk volumes increased by 5.55% to 14,455,664 tons. At the same time, the general cargo, on the other hand, fell by 4.87% to 467,665 tons in the first month of the year.
