South Carolina Ports (SC Ports) has achieved its busiest February on record, which is also the twelfth consecutive month of container throughput growth. SC Ports handled 230,420 TEU at Wando Welch Terminal, North Charleston Terminal and Hugh K. Leatherman Terminal, which translates to a 26% increase year-over-year.
“With record throughput volumes, we continue to experience a high number of import containers awaiting delivery on our terminals,” said Jim Newsome, SC Ports CEO.
Furthermore, SC Ports reported 119,582 TEU of loaded imports in February, reflecting a rise of 46% over the same period of the previous year, as retail imports continue to drive sustained cargo growth. At the same time, loaded exports decreased by 19% year-on-year to 54,755 TEU.
Thus far in fiscal year (FY) 2022, which started in July, SC Ports has moved more than 1.87 million TEU, representing a growth of 16% over the previous FY.
Meanwhile, Newsome unveiled plans for infrastructure projects, including the completion of the Charleston Harbor Deepening Project during the upcoming fall, the construction of the rail-served Navy Base Intermodal Facility and the inner-harbour barge project, as well as the completion of the Inland Port Greer expansion project.
