South Carolina Ports (SC Ports) purchased two Konecranes hybrid rubber-tired gantry cranes (RTGs) for their inland port operation in Greer in the fourth quarter of 2023.
These new RTGs are anticipated to bolster the port’s overall capacity, complementing the existing fleet of seven Konecranes RTGs currently in operation at the terminal. Delivery and commissioning of the new cranes are scheduled for the fourth quarter of the current year.
“SC Ports is committed to an environmentally sustainable future. These two new hybrid RTGs will increase our cargo capacity and reduce our operational emissions when compared to traditional diesel-powered RTGs,” stated Michael Hoffman, SC Ports’ director of Inland Port Operations.
Inland Port Greer, under the ownership and management of South Carolina Ports, operates around the clock and facilitates an expedited, overnight rail connection between the Upstate region of South Carolina and the Port of Charleston.
The ongoing expansion of the Greer container terminal aims to double its size and enhance rail and cargo handling capabilities.
The order comprises two hybrid Konecranes RTGs designed with a span covering 6 container rows alongside a truck lane, with the capability to stack containers up to 1-over-5 high.
These RTGs utilize a battery for regular operations and incorporate diesel when additional power is necessary. This hybrid power system significantly diminishes fuel consumption and diesel emissions, resulting in a cleaner and more cost-effective operation.
Each machine is equipped with an ergonomic cabin to enhance operator safety and efficiency, along with TRUCONNECT® Remote Monitoring to optimize performance, streamline maintenance, and minimize downtime.
