As part of its participation in DEFSEC, Canada’s second largest defence conference, Seaspan held an event outlining business opportunities for its growing domestic supply chain
Halifax, NS – On October 2, approximately 60 representatives from current and potential suppliers attended Seaspan Shipyards’ (Seaspan) industry engagement event hosted in Halifax. At the event, participants received information on the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS) and the opportunities associated with the non-combat package of vessels being constructed at Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards.
As part of its NSS commitments, Seaspan has to date engaged more than 500 Canadian suppliers and assigned approximately $650 million in committed contracts. The majority of these are with small- and medium-sized businesses. In all, Canadian suppliers make up more than 90 per cent of Seaspan’s NSS-supply chain.
The NSS is designed to provide new opportunities for Canadian companies to become active suppliers for the shipbuilding industry. Through events like this and participation in DEFSEC, Seaspan is demonstrating its commitment to the continued development of a Canadian supply chain. With the recent start of construction on the Joint Support Ships (JSS) for the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN), more opportunities will be available to Canadian companies which will help to create highly-skilled, middle-class jobs.
