Slovenian container port increases TEU capacity

Port of Koper in Slovenia has increased the container capacity of its Pier I by 15% and the box terminal now has an annual capacity of 1.5 million TEU.

“We have completed one of the largest individual investments in the last decades,” pointed out Luka Koper, adding that the pressure on storage areas is now reduced.

The construction works for the extension of the terminal began in mid-2020, while the value of the investment reached €45,6 million (US$48.1 million) with part of the financing having been secured within the European Union project NAPA4CORE/Connecting Europe Facility.

This is not the last chapter of the expansion of the container terminal, according to the major Slovenian port, which said it is currently preparing documentation for the extension of the pier also on the north side. This extension is expected to increase the terminal’s annual capacity to approximately 2 million TEU.

Boštjan Napast, president of the management board of Luka Koper, highlighted that this project will have a significantly larger investment with its total value reaching €248 million (US$262 million) by the end of 2030. The investment will include ship to shore (STS) cranes, 340 meters of quay and an additional 118.000 m² of storage areas.
