Søren Skou gives his six cents worth

Maersk CEO Søren Skou told the BBC that the cost of decarbonising shipping can be paid by the consumer with just a little extra cost added to consumer items.

[s2If is_user_logged_in()]According to Skou, the cost of environmentally friendly shipping to Maersk Line would see its fuel costs double, from US$4 billion annually, adding 20% in shipping costs for the carrier’s customers.

The extra costs involved in shipping a pair of “Sneakers from Vietnam, translate into something like six cents per pair of sneakers. So I don’t think that it will really impact the consumption opportunities for consumers out there,” Skou told the BBC, adding, “I’m absolutely sure that this is doable, from a consumer point of view”.

Interestingly the cost of shipping trainers from China, a decade or so ago was one cent, so the costs have increased six-fold according to Maersk, who made record profits of US$8.2 billion over the last year.

Skou’s interview with the BBC coincides with the carrier’s announcement that it will build a 2,000TEU methanol and HFO dual fuel vessel by 2023, with the methanol sourced from renewable materials and processes.
