The manager of the Paranaguá container terminal, Terminal de Contêineres de Paranaguá (TCP), has purchased 11 rubber tyred gantry (RTG) cranes, as part of a series of investments in the infrastructure of the Brazilian box terminal, which is the largest one in South America.
The package includes new equipment, an increased capacity to receive and store reefer containers, and new accesses and systems.
The new machines, which will be manufactured by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Company Limited (ZPMC) and are expected to be delivered by December 2023, have a lifting load of 41 tons under-spreader, 1 over 6 stacking height.
Paranaguá container terminal is controlled by the Chinese group CMPort and the acquisition of the machinery is part of an ongoing investment plan, according to which a second batch of 10 RTGs will be ordered by end of 2025 in order to replace older equipment.
In addition to the purchase of new RTGs, TCP is expanding its capacity for reefer container storage by 43% to 5,178 plugs.
Furthermore, a renovation programme of the existing gate will be implemented with paperless features of Trucker’s Apps and longer scales for Bi-train trucks, according to a statement.
TCP is the container terminal with the largest offer of maritime services in Brazil, with 16 regular long-haul lines. The terminal handled 1.1 million TEUs in 2021, equivalent to 9% of the entire Brazilian annual container handling.
