Spanish ports post stable Q1 container volumes

Spanish ports have maintained stable box volumes in the first quarter of 2025, recording an aggregated 4.32 million TEUs, which translates to a marginal growth of 1% compared to the same period last year.

Spain’s largest port, Algeciras, saw an 11% decline in throughput, marking a poor performance. Barcelona, the country’s second-busiest port, also experienced a drop, albeit a more modest 2% decrease.

Among the country’s top three ports, only Valencia recorded positive growth, posting a 3% increase in cargo volumes.

The standout performer, however, was Malaga, which more than quadrupled its throughput following significant losses in 2024. Despite this sharp rebound, its volumes remain well below 2023 levels.

On the other hand, Bilbao port experienced an important year-on-year decline of 10% in its box volumes, reporting 102,000 TEUs in 2025 Q1.
