Finnish port equipment manufacturer Kalmar and global logistics service provider Star Container Services B.V. have signed an agreement for 12 empty container handlers, which will be deployed at the Rotterdam Maasvlakte terminal.
The delivery of the machines is expected in the second quarter of 2024, while the order also includes a six-year Kalmar Complete Care service contract.
Star Container Services is expanding its cargo-handling fleet to accommodate the significant expansion of its operations at Rotterdam Maasvlakte, where container volumes are set to skyrocket in the coming years. The Maasvlakte, Rotterdam’s newest port, is home to Europe’s largest container cluster and has direct access to the North Sea.
“The huge expansion project at Rotterdam Maasvlakte is a key step forward for us and we require reliable, fuel-efficient equipment to support this expansion. Kalmar empty container handlers are the ideal solution for this project as they offer excellent reliability, fuel economy and driver comfort with a low total cost of ownership,” stated Andre Van Tonder, managing director of Star Container Services.
Additionally, Star Container Services will get empty container handlers with eco-friendly Stage V engines and a customised safety cage. They will also be outfitted with the Kalmar EGO cabin, which has updated ergonomics for increased comfort and sight in all directions, as well as a revolutionary tilt cylinder design for improved driver stability and control.
“We are proud that Star Container Services have once again placed their trust in Kalmar equipment to support this significant expansion of their Rotterdam operations. In addition to the benefits of our equipment offering, our local service capabilities have played a crucial role in securing the agreement as they give the customer confidence that their machines will receive the best possible long-term care,” stated John Schut, sales manager of Kalmar Benelux.
