Strong volumes continue through Port of New york and New Jersey

Cargo traffic has remained strong at the Port of New York and New Jersey (NYNJ) during August with its total volumes exceeding 780,000TEU, which reflects an increase of 13.4% compared to August 2020.

Both imports and exports have risen in August at the NYNJ Port, as import loads completed 399,716TEU, representing a growth of almost 9% over the same month of 2020, while exports reached 103,886TEU, a slight year on year increase of 0.8%.

Additionally, during August, export empties grew by 27.3%, exceeding 275,000TEU.

From the beginning of the year until August, the US port has reached a total of 5,934,664TEU. During this eight-month period, imports rose by 26.4% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, with 3,034,841 TEU entering the port. Exported loads in the US port totalled 914,296TEU, representing a 5.6% increase over the first eight months of 2020.

Moreover, from January through August, export empties totalled 1,968,237 TEU, a significant 42.7% increase compared to the same period of 2020. As for import empties during the same period, they also saw an increase of 15.3%.

Rail was the only sector that recorded a decrease, while volumes transferred by box trains lowered by 9.2% from the previous year’s August figure, according to the port authority, totalling 58,931 containers.

However, from January through August, rail volumes have noted a growth of 6.8% over the same period of 2020.
