Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping and John Swire & Sons Limited, the parent company of the Swire Group, have signed an agreement for a long-term collaboration around the development of safe and sustainable decarbonisation solutions for the maritime industry.
In particular, the United Kingdom-based company which is responsible for formulating and directing overall group strategy will be involved with the Center team as a strategic partner to provide support in realising its transition strategy.
The two partners will therefore explore opportunities to fund and research practical solutions to accelerate decarbonisation in the shipping industry, while the UK-headquartered group will also join the Danish company’s Center Advisory Board, guiding and contributing to the future development of the Center activities.
In welcoming John Swire & Sons, Center’s CEO Bo Cerup-Simonsen said, “As a diversified company, Swire brings experience and know-how from a wide range of segments and can help us bridge learnings across disciplines and sectors which is essential when you are changing an entire business system.”
In addition, the Director of John Swire & Sons Limited, Sam Swire, claimed that the partnership Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping allows the UK company which is committed to a sustainable industry to work “with like-minded organisations to help the industry achieve that goal.”
He also went on to highlight that the two partners will jointly address decarbonisation issues, develop new technologies and exchange views on sustainability best practices at an industry level.
“Achieving the long-term target of decarbonisation requires new fuel types and a systemic change within the industry, as well as a new legislation to enable its acceleration,” stated a representative by Maersk.
John Swire & Sons Limited operates a range of wholly-owned businesses, including deep-sea shipping, cold storage, offshore and road transport logistics services, waste to energy, mining services, and beverage ingredients with its main areas of operation in Australia, Papua New Guinea, East Africa, Sri Lanka, the United States and the United Kingdom.
