TecPlata, a subsidiary of International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) in Argentina, has become the first port in the country to achieve carbon-neutral certification.
This certification highlights TecPlata’s dedication to reducing its carbon footprint by promoting responsible resource management and offsetting unavoidable emissions through certified carbon credits, which contribute to the development of renewable energy projects. The company will have its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions monitored annually.
“This certification is a testament to TecPlata’s dedication to minimizing our environmental impact. By reducing and offsetting our carbon footprint, we contribute to the protection of our planet and, at the same time, promote the use of renewable energy,” commented Juan Pablo Trujillo, TecPlata’s chief executive officer.
TecPlata’s achievement is part of its broader sustainability initiatives, which include waste management, efficient water use, and emission reduction efforts. The certification process adhered to international standards set by the GHG Protocol and ISO14064-1, with guidance from Carbon Neutral+.
To offset its emissions, TecPlata acquired carbon credits certified by Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), connected to the Manantiales Behr Wind Farm project in Argentina, owned by YPF.
Moreover, this project involves installing wind turbines that are linked to the Argentine Interconnection System (SADI), replacing electricity that would have been produced by fossil fuel power plants.
This certification aligns with the ICTSI Group’s decarbonization goals, which aim for a greener, cleaner future while fostering innovation and growth opportunities. ICTSI’s global mission includes making a positive impact on partner communities through environmental and social development programs.
Through the Comprehensive Climate Change Initiative, TecPlata supports ICTSI’s commitment to reducing GHG emissions from its operations (Scope 1) and purchased electricity (Scope 2) by 26% per container movement by 2030, using 2021 as the baseline. This is a key milestone in the journey toward achieving carbon neutrality for Scopes 1 and 2 by 2050.
TecPlata is now the fifth terminal within the ICTSI Group to reach carbon neutrality, following Contecon Guayaquil in Ecuador, Contecon Manzanillo in Mexico, Rio Brasil Terminal, and Tecon Suape in Brazil.
