The best packing tapes for sealing: PVC or polypropylene?

In business, they are almost as necessary as electricity. All sorts of firms and institutions require packing tapes for sealing. The right choice of product can have an impact on day-to-day operations. It is therefore a good idea to know the difference between PVC and polypropylene solutions. Let’s compare them, shall we?

Polypropylene adhesive tapes

Polypropylene packaging tapes are ideal for fast, punctual, high-quality sealing. They provide good adhesion to all materials, such as cardboard, glass, or plastic. They withstand rapid temperature shifts, which is important for safe transportation in changing conditions. Strong, resistant, economical, biodegradable, and solvent-free.

These types of packing tapes for sealing are perfect for light or medium-weight containers. Polypropylene has the advantage of instant and intense adhesion. It is also easy to unroll. After application at room temperature, it shows good resistance to cold (up to -30 °C) and heat (up to 150 °C), as well as UV rays and aging. Furthermore, PP tapes work fine with diluted acids and alkalis. Over the long term, however, they lose adhesion and temperature resistance.

Another problem lies with roughness. This tape is very difficult to cut by hand, but that reduces the risk of tearing. Solvent-free and recyclable, it also reduces health and environmental concerns. Usually available with a particularly economical glue, it is noisier than other options when unrolled but remains the cheapest adhesive on the market.

Silent PP tapes with long-term adhesion

This is a premium version of an ordinary polypropylene packing tape for sealing. It has a solvent-free formula and improved effectiveness on all types of packaging, including recycled cardboard. These tapes offer an excellent alternative to PVC. They are moderately expensive and have similar characteristics since they are coated with the same adhesive. Apart from that, they unroll silently and smoothly. Very resistant to cutting and breaking.

Such products are quite simple to use. But the lack of unpleasant noise truly distinguishes them on the market. Because of that, silent packing tapes don’t create distractions at work. This feature is deeply appreciated in certain circumstances. A hospital, for example.

PVC packing tapes for sealing

The classic and versatile PVC adhesive tape is used to close and secure boxes. They are particularly efficient and easy to use in most applications. High quality, resistant, with great adhesion on all surfaces. PVC taping allows controlled, smooth, and relatively silent unwinding. It is also flexible and can be cut by hand.

Coated with a natural rubber-based adhesive, PVC tapes for packaging guarantee maximum and immediate adhesion with excellent long-term durability. Good waterproofing is a valuable feature, as is high resistance to acids. Finally, these tapes can be peeled off without leaving marks on most surfaces (glass, wood, plastic, etc.). They remain, however, particularly sensitive to temperature changes and cold. Unlike polypropylene tapes, they are not biodegradable.

Summary

The choice between PVC and PP packing tapes for sealing depends on particular needs. The wide temperature spectrum during shipping calls for a polypropylene solution. More casual uses require a transparent PVC packaging tape scotch. Nevertheless, both versions come in a different application width that firmly holds and protects packages. Business requirements are therefore the best indicator of which product to buy.
