Port of New York and New Jersey sees double-digit volumes growth in July

The Port of New York and New Jersey (NYNJ) has marked double-digit volume increases in all sectors during July, with the total throughput elevated by almost 26% compared to the same month of 2020, while 758,810TEU and 420,847 containers were handled.

These figures lead to total traffic of more than 5.15 million TEU and 2.86 million boxes for the January – July period.

Both imports and exports saw double-digit gains in the second largest port of the United States (US). In particular, imports in July rose by 20.6% year-on-year, totalling 396,699TEU, while for the first seven months of the year, they reached more than 2.6 million TEU, which translates to a rise of 29.4% compared to the same period of 2020.

Furthermore, exports exceeded 362,100TEU and recorded a 30% increase in July. From January through July, exports have reached an increase of 30% compared to the corresponding period of last year, with more than 2.5 million TEU.

In addition, export empties at the NYNJ Port grew by 42.7% in July, with 250,952 boxes, driven by the surge in imports requiring empty containers to be sent back to manufacturing centres. As for the seven first months of 2021, export empties totalled 1,692,745 containers, which translates to a spike of 45.6% year-on-year.

However, the autos sector presented the most significant increase with a spike of 79% from the previous year’s monthly figure and a total of 39,690 autos moving through the port.

Meanwhile, rail container volumes in July were 56,492, a number that represents an increase of 6.1% compared to the previous year’s same month.
