New container block-train service launches between Thessaloniki and Skopje

Thessaloniki Port Authority (ThPA) announced a new container block-train service between Thessaloniki and Skopje, the capital of the Republic of North Macedonia.

At the same time, it marks the one-year anniversary of the railway link between Thessaloniki and Nis, Republic of Serbia.

According to a statement, ThPA expands its activities in the two cities, increasing its presence in the sector of intermodal services and providing consumers with dependable, efficient, and environmentally responsible transportation solutions.

This is a strategic decision intended to improve the Port of Thessaloniki’s connectivity with the nations of the wider Balkan and Southeast European area, according to the Greek port’s statement.

Moreover, the new regular container block-train service between the Port of Thessaloniki and Skopje will begin on 6 September 2023, with trains departing from Thessaloniki and arriving in Skopje on the same day.

ThPA in collaboration with eleven business and public organisations, is providing the new intermodal service.

“The new intermodal service provides climate-neutral transport from the Port of Thessaloniki to Skopje, significantly contributing to the reduction of transport-related CO emissions. At the same time, it allows ThPA S.A. to further develop the connectivity of the Port and its international intermodal network, which brings Thessaloniki closer to customers in Southeast and Central Europe,” stated Thanos Liagkos, the executive chairman of the BoD and managing director of ThPA.
