The Portugal-based freight forwarder and logistics operator, Transitex has concluded the construction of its first refrigerated warehouse, which will be ready for operations on 28 February.
The Turkish port operator YILPORT Holding, which is the mother company of Transitex, invested around €2 million (US$2.27 million) in this project.
The new cold storage warehouse has the capacity to store 1.500 pallets, according to Transitex representative.
The company said the new infrastructure allows offering integrated services to fruit and vegetable exporters in Portugal and Spain, as well as creating solutions for the cold chain of fruit imports with origin in the southern hemisphere.
“In this warehouse, reefer containers coming from Portuguese Atlantic Ports are deconsolidated, so they can return to the ports. The fresh cargo can then be distributed and delivered to its final destination, like inland Spain,” told Transitex representative to Container News.
“We are expecting to use it for the South African citrus campaign this year. Our South African team is already offering this facility to our customers there and we hope that this year we will already be unloading a lot of reefer containers from South Africa in Elvas,” she added.
Transitex’s cold warehouse in Elvas has a total of 2.257 m², of which 1.834 m² are cold storage and is served by seven quay doors. Located on the border between Portugal and Spain, this new infrastructure is duly certified as a Customs and Tax Cold Warehouse, Export Warehouse, Public Export Warehouse and Border Inspection Post.
The market dynamic requires the existence of facilities adapted to the needs of the market, providing services such as inspection, customs clearance, cross-docking, storage, distribution, and all others necessary to complete a cargo import process from countries outside European Union, according to Transitex CEO, Fernando Lima, who stated, “The usual ports of entry for these goods are Lisbon, Sines, Setúbal and Leixões, being the largest consumption centres on the Spanish side. Elvas is ideally located for us to complement the services we already provide to our customers.”
