“Tremendously competent” maritime will achieve carbon goals

In a wide-ranging discussion The Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping CEO Bo Cerup-Simonsen, told Container News that he believes that the maritime sector is well set to meet its maritime goals.

Technologically the maritime industry has shown that it has the ability to make changes, while the commercial side is seeing strong developments with customers demanding low carbon and carbon free movement of goods; and that means that the financial side must focus on ESG (environmental, social and governance) and the businesses that they are financing and that must lead to industry pushing the regulator make the shift towards decarbonisation at a faster rate.

“All of these dots are starting to be connected in a very powerful manner, basically we’re looking at a movement ahead where regulation, finance, the commercial drive and now also the technical innovation are coming together. And now actually we have a window where all of those four elements could move forward in a concerted manner,” explained Cerup-Simonsen.

The Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center CEO said he was excited about the possibilities for the future. Climate change has gained a level of attention, within the industry, that is beyond imagination, industry is now pushing for change.

He went on to say that the International Maritime Organization needs a lot of help to understand the risks and opportunities ahead, “If we can help to create confidence and to understand the risks ahead that will be a contribution towards accelerating [the pace of change],” he explained.
