Trucking strike in Spain, fears of container transport disruption

Several associations of the transport sector in Spain have called for an indefinite strike as from today (14 March) applicable to the whole territory of the country.

Plataforma Defense Sector Transporte, a Spanish association established by carriers aiming to represent the interests of small and medium enterprises in the transport sector, has announced an “indefinite national strike of all types of transport” starting on 14 March.

The action will be led by subcontractors of the country’s major logistics companies and has been called to denounce rising operating costs, including fuel, according to local media.

“90% of the medium and small transport companies are in an economic situation of total bankruptcy, just as working conditions are totally precarious. Consequences paid directly by all salaried drivers whom we will defend in the required lawsuits,” said in an announcement Plataforma Defense Sector Transporte.

The strike is expected to affect the movement of containers in the country. “In light of the announced strike, the movement of containers will become a challenge and due to these external reasons where Maersk has no control, our transport plan will also be impacted,” said Maersk in a recent advisory.
