TSA launches new online Transportation Worker Identification Credential renewal process

The US government agency Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has strengthened the renewal process for the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC®) to help transportation workers.

The company now enables current TWIC holders to renew their credentials online, which eliminates the need to go to an enrollment center and makes the five-year renewal process more convenient.

It should be noted that the TWIC is required by the Maritime Security Act for seafarers and workers who need access to secure areas of the US marine facilities and vessels.

TSA conducts a background check to determine whether an individual is eligible and issues the credentials. The Coast Guard regulates TWIC use in the marine environment.

US citizens, lawful permanent residents, naturalized citizens, asylum seekers, refugees, and lawful status nonimmigrants can apply for the TWIC credential.

Nearly 60% of TWIC holders renew their card every five years, while most eligible applicants receive their TWIC card in less than 10 days, according to a statement.

Applicants with more complex cases may take 60 days or more to process. Applicants can check their TWIC status online at any time.
