The United Arab Emirates-flagged roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) ship, Al Shamy 6 sank 48 kilometres off the Iranian Persian Gulf coastal city of Asalouyeh today (17 March).
The cargo ship had a crew of 30 members, 16 of whom are reported to be rescued, 11 remain in life rafts, one seafarer was rescued by a tanker that was sailing nearby and two crew members were said to have been in the water, according to the latest information.

The crew consisted of nationals from Sudan, India, Pakistan, Uganda, Tanzania and Ethiopia.
The 6,000 dwt Al Salmy 6 was sailing from Dubai to Umm Qasr, Iraq, according to maritime information service provider MarineTraffic, when it encountered treacherous weather, which forced the vessel to list at a precarious angle and within hours fully submerged the ship.
