The cities of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom and Halifax in Canada will formalise their “sister city” agreement in order to develop business opportunities in shipbuilding, oceanology and satellite applications.
The agreement will be signed on 19 January by the mayor of Halifax, Mike Savage, and the lord mayor of Portsmouth, councillor Hugh Mason and aims to progress trade opportunities between the two cities.
The two parties are keen to explore a partnership between naval bases and ports, visitor economy links and best practice on clean technology and sustainability as both cities are committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions.
Mike Savage commented, “This agreement with Portsmouth builds on the relationships that already exist between the Naval Bases and Universities in both cities and will enable us to explore new economic opportunities together that will generate business, jobs and growth in both regions.”
