Port of Houston has achieved the best July and the fourth busiest month in terms of container handling in its history. The total volume last month was 328,498 TEU, which translates to a 10% increase from July 2021.
Container handling has reached 2,225,563 TEU year-to-date, representing an increase of 17% compared to the same period in the previous year.
In July 2022 import containers increased by 17% compared to the same month last year, to 159,881 TEU, while loaded exports were 102,644 TEU, a 36% year on year increase.
“Port Houston continues to build capacity and adjust to the changing market by providing more yard space, more equipment, and more hours of service to our customers,” said Roger Guenther, executive director at Port Houston.
“Port Houston is meeting with customers, communicating updates and working with our partners in the ILA to maintain cargo fluidity despite the extraordinary volume,” he continued.
Total tonnage for the first seven months of the year at Port Houston’s facilities is up 24%, compared with the same period in 2021.
“Our most pressing concern is the urgent need for importers to quickly evacuate their containers to open up space, and for exporters and importers alike to increase their use of our Saturday gates, which are now open from 08:00 – 17:00 every Saturday,” noted Guenther.
