US-Asia containerised exports decline slightly

Containerised exports from the US to 10 major countries and territories in Asia (based on volumes at ports of destination) remained nearly unchanged in 2019, declining by 0.7% from the previous year to 5,958,060TEU, according to US research company Descartes Datamyne.

By origin, exports to China suffered a double-digit contraction of 15.8% to total 1,748,420TEU. Containerised exports to Japan and South Korea improved 1.6% to 744,654TEU and 8.8% to 715,050TEU, respectively, but cargo to Taiwan and Hong Kong lost ground, by 4% to 610,981TEU and by 20.6% to 162,637TEU, respectively.

Containers to India and Vietnam both increased notably, with the former surging 14.3% to 561,971TEU and the latter, 16% to 499,143TEU. Volumes to Malaysia increased 43.7% to 290,576TEU. Cargo to Thailand was also up 16.8% to 245,144TEU.
