US waterways can improve transport efficiencies DOT

US Government grants of US$9.5 million are being made available to fund the increased use of up to 12,000 miles of inland waterways for the movement of both freight and passenger traffic, the, US Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration announced on 5 March.

Grant funding will be awarded as part of America’s Marine Highway Program (AMHP), which supports the increased use of navigable inland waterways to increase productivity and to create an efficient transport system.

“Our country has 12,000 miles of navigable inland waterways,” said Maritime Administrator Mark H. Buzby, “By continuing to invest in them, we are investing in the continued success of our nation’s economy.”

Government wants to encourage close working by public authorities with private organisations to develop the inland waterway system.

“Eligible projects for grant awards are Marine Highway Projects previously designated by the Secretary of Transportation,” said a Maritime Administration statement.
