According to the latest Valenciaport Statistical Bulletin, in March, the docks at Valenciaport handled nearly 7 million tonnes of cargo, marking a growth of 3.84%. Specifically in terms of containers, the Spanish port handled 459,749 TEUs, representing a significant increase of 15.86%.
Year-to-date figures show a total of 19.2 million tonnes handled, reflecting a growth of 5.41%. Container traffic reached 1,243,844 TEUs, showing a notable increase of 12.07%. In March alone, the Port of València welcomed 83,902 individuals, including 56,970 passengers on regular lines with the Balearic Islands and 26,932 cruise passengers.
Moreover, ro-ro traffic, encompassing maritime ro-ro services, lorries, and platforms, saw a rise of +2.09%, while Intermodal Transport Units (ITUs) experienced a notable increase of +7.54%.
According to a statement, emerging nations are increasingly prominent in the traffic data reported by the Port Authority of València (PAV). This trend is evident in trade with countries like Ukraine, Turkey, Algeria, and Saudi Arabia, among others.
Notably, trade with Ukraine, despite its ongoing conflict, has seen a remarkable surge, particularly in cereal imports, which have more than doubled, increasing by 107.9%. The volume of goods imported from Ukraine in the current year, totalling 354,265 tonnes, reflects a significant increase of 116.68% compared to the same period last year. Additionally, transit goods saw a growth of 20.16%, while exports remained unchanged.
Also, traffic with the Far East region is also on the rise, with the handling of 207,838 TEUs in the first three months of the year, representing a notable increase of 23.38%.
Although China remains Valenciaport’s primary trading partner, managing 157,025 containers, significant growth in TEU traffic has been observed with Greece (+82.91%), Egypt (+81.45%), and Saudi Arabia (+76.61%). This growth is primarily attributed to increased transhipment traffic at Valencian docks, originating mainly from Asia and bound for other Mediterranean ports.
Algeria and Turkey are also seeing increases in their traffic volumes (tonnes) by +29.01% and +21.75%, respectively. Noteworthy increases in exports to Morocco (+16.59%) and France (+64.45%) were recorded in the first quarter of the year.
