Valenciaport’s container traffic remains strong in October

Valenciaport has recorded stable container volume growth from January until October, having handled a total of 4,682,582 containers, which translates to a 4.8% year-on-year rise.

The weight of containerised goods in tonnes has been elevated by 3.5% over last year’s same period, while the Spanish port has proceeded a total of 71 million tonnes in goods during the first ten months of the year, representing an increase of 7.4% year-on-year.

During the same period, container exports grew by almost 18% and container imports saw a rise of more than 17%, compared to the January-October period of 2020. However, transhipment and empty containers dropped slightly by 0.96% and by 0.25%, respectively.

In full container traffic, China continues to be Valenciaport’s main trading partner with 503,821TEU in the first ten months of the year, reflecting an increase of 16.6%, followed by the United States with 442,920TEU and Turkey with 267,305TEU.

Meanwhile, the most important sector for October was vehicles and transport elements with 9.64 million tonnes, followed by the agri-food industry with 7.4 million tonnes, construction materials with 6.7 million tonnes and other goods with 6.6 million tonnes.

The most dynamic sector in foreign sales were energy products with a rise of 37%, iron and steel with a growth of 27%, construction materials that were elevated by 26.6% and agri-foodstuffs and livestock with an increase in exports of 21.8%.

“Valenciaport is the ally of the Valencian and Spanish business fabric to increase sales abroad, a symbol that the production centres are operational and Spain’s client countries are acquiring products,” commented the port authority.

In October alone, the Valencia Port Authority (PAV) Statistical Bulletin reported that the full TEU for export grew by 1.7% year-on-year, those for import by 5%, while transhipment and empty boxes declined sharply by 19.5% and by 28%, accordingly.

“These data show the important export/import activity in the docks of the València, Sagunto and Gandia enclosures, which have detected a diversion of transhipment containers to other port facilities,” noted the Spanish port in a statement.
