The Port of New York and New Jersey saw another double-digit increase for total container volume in May, while rail volume broke its all-time monthly record.
The total volume for May was 796,693TEU, which translates to a 48.2% increase in comparison to 537,412TEU in May 2020. This increase brings total box volumes to over 3.64 million TEU for the year through May.
In particular, imports at the Port of NY & NJ rose by 49% in May compared to the previous year, totalling 396,417TEU, while exports totalled 134,458TEU, representing a 40.8% increase over the same period of 2020.
Additionally, export empties saw a growth of 50.6%, totalling 263,527TEU in May.
The US port has also set a new monthly rail volume record with a total of 62,026 containers, which represents an increase of 22.8% from the previous year’s May figure.
In the meantime, autos led the volume surge as well, with a total of 41,308 autos moving through the Port in May. This number corresponds to a significant 88.7% growth, compared to May 2020.
