Siem Offshore is collaborating with technology firm Wärtsilä to diminish the carbon footprint of its fleet of 26 vessels.
The company aims to cut CO2 emissions by 50% by 2030, recognizing partnership as crucial in discovering suitable technological remedies.
The agreement targets the identification and deployment of solutions to enhance energy efficiency and substantially decrease greenhouse gas emissions across Siem Offshore’s vessels.
In addition, each vessel will undergo assessment for suitable solutions, potential operational enhancements, and considerations for extending its lifespan. Siem Offshore aspires to achieve complete carbon neutrality by 2050.
“Partnering with key suppliers such as Wärtsilä with the expertise and innovative technologies required are very natural for us. Our existing fleet is in a large degree powered by Wärtsilä, and we have for a longer period cooperated on new environmentally friendly solutions,” stated Jon August Houge, ESG director at Siem Offshore, cooperation is essential if we are to meet the ambitious environmental targets set.
”Siem Offshore has the vision to become the leading vessel provider, and as operators of high-end offshore vessels facing strict environmental requirements, they challenge us as a technology provider. We are happy and proud to have been selected as a key supplier to collaborate in this decarbonization project. Since no single solution will be relevant to every ship, by working together we intend to find what works best and most efficiently on a case-by-case basis. We see this as a blueprint for achieving the best possible results,” stated Cato Esperø, head of Sales, at Wärtsilä Norway.
Wärtsilä leads the way in pioneering and introducing innovative, eco-friendly solutions for the maritime industry, including engines powered by LNG, Methanol, and Ammonia, along with Carbon Capture technology.
“Siem Offshore’s GHG targets are ambitious and the decarbonisation technology is now being commercialized, thus I am confident that Wärtsilä will remain a valued partner for Siem Offshore in reaching their emission targets. Wärtsilä believes that alternative fuels will be key enabler for marine decarbonization as these fuels become widely available for bunkering,” added Egil Hystad, decarbonisation manager of Wärtsilä Norway.
Moreover, Wärtsilä has solidified its position as a pioneer in advancing ammonia as a viable fuel for marine engines and fuel cells. The company has achieved a significant milestone by successfully running combustion engines on ammonia, achieving over 70% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, and has officially introduced the groundbreaking W25 Ammonia engine.
