Weissman is the new president of Long Beach Commission

Harbor Commission vice president Sharon L. Weisman has been elected board president to lead the Long Beach Port board of harbor commissioners, the five-member board that oversees the Port of Long Beach.

The position of vice president was taken by Bobby Olvera Jr. and the position of secretary, by Bonnie Lowenthal, according to the decision of the board.

It should be noted that every year during this period, the commissioners select a president and two board officers to serve for a year.

The new commission officers will begin their terms on the 8th of August, when outgoing president Steven Neal will hand over the gavel to Weisman at the regularly scheduled board meeting that day.

Weissman served as senior advisor to mayor Robert Garcia from July 2014 and deputy for transportation from 2017 until her retirement in June 2020. She is also active in the community, serving as vice president of public affairs and former president of the Long Beach Public library foundation, among others.

Appointed to the harbor commission in 2020, Weissman was elected as vice president of the board in July 2021.

“I am honored by the trust my colleagues on the board have placed in me,” Weissman said.

“In collaboration with my fellow commissioners, executive director Mario Cordero, and staff, I look forward to navigating our way through the challenges of the supply chain, supporting the necessary infrastructure that will keep the Port competitive, and building upon the port’s robust green initiatives,” she added.

The board’s role is to set policy for the port and direct the Port’s executive director, who leads approximately 550 employees in the development and promotion of the Port of Long Beach.
