On 27 July, Yang Ming has taken delivery of a new 11,000TEU container ship, which was chartered from Cairo-headquartered Shoei Kisen Kaisha and was built by Shoei’s parent company, Imabari Shipbuilding.
The newbuilding was named “YM Travel” and will join THE Alliance’s Transpacific service PS6 on 20 July. YM Travel will sail under the following port rotation:
Qingdao – Ningbo – Pusan – Los Angeles – Oakland – Kobe – Qingdao
THE Alliance is a container shipping alliance which comprises Hapag-Lloyd, Yang Ming, Ocean Network Express (ONE) and HMM.
To further strengthen its mid- to long-term operational efficiency, Yang Ming ordered a total of fourteen 11,000TEU new boxships through long-term charter agreements with ship owners.
YM Travel is the sixth delivered in the series.
This type of vessels has a nominal capacity of 11,860TEU and is equipped with 1,000 plugs for reefer containers. With a length of 333.9 metres, a width of 48.4 metres, a draft of 16 metres, these ships are designed to cruise at a speed up to 23 knots.
Additionally, the vessels incorporate various environmental features including scrubbers, Water Ballast Treatment Plant and Alternative Marine Power system.
The Taiwanese liner operator started taking delivery of these new vessels from 2020. These newbulidings will lower the average age of its global fleet, reduce unit cost and achieve energy efficiency, according to the company’s statement.
The naming ceremony of YM Travel was held at Imabari Hiroshima Shipyard with Yang Ming’s attendees joining the ceremony remotely at their Taipei office.
