The Zeebrugge port authority, COSCO Shipping Ports (CSP) Zeebrugge and the transportation and freight forwarding company, Naviland Cargo, have partnered to increase the frequency of the rail service, which connects the major Belgian port and the eastern French rail hub of Strasbourg.
The connection now offers a daily roundtrip with a stopover in Antwerp, according to a statement.
“We have increased the capacity of the rail connection with our hub in Strasbourg,” said Lindsy Mertens from the Antwerp office of the French combined transport operator, and went on to add, “Recently, we increased the frequency to five times a week, with a stopover in Antwerp.”
Chief Officer Logistics & Sales of Port of Zeebrugge, Johan Abel commented, “The Strasbourg region has many forwarders and is therefore important for the development of the hinterland network of Zeebrugge. Intermodal connections are often a chicken-and-egg story where charterers wait for carriers and vice versa. By making that connection more competitive in partnership, we break that vicious circle.”
