China-based port equipment manufacturer, Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries (ZPMC) will supply automated rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs) to a South African port for the first time in its history.
On 29 June, ZPMC won the bid for 17 sets of RTGs in the Ports of Durban and Cape Town of Transnet Group of South Africa, which is the first time that ZPMC’s RTGs have entered the South African market.
The project was tendered in October 2020 and lasted for eight months, with ZPMC stating it broke the monopoly of foreign enterprises in the South African RTG market for many years and won the order at one stroke.
The Port of Durban is the largest container port in southern Africa, and the Port of Cape Town is the southernmost container port in the African continent. The two ports together undertake more than 80% of the container handling business in the country.
Up to now, ZPMC has seven quay cranes in the Port of Durban. The 22 straddle carriers won the bid in 2020 are all being debugged on site, and there is one RMG in the Port of Cape Town.
“This bid has once again expanded ZPMC’s product layout in South Africa,” pointed out ZMPC in its statement.
